I know this may not be much comfort, but this story is freakish even by Detroit standards. It turns out that the shooter's home had just been raided by the cops because a runaway teenage girl had accused him of kidnapping and assaulting her. He walked into the precinct with just a few rounds of ammo, so he had to have known what the outcome would be. As you may have noticed by now, the two Detroit papers offer heavy daily doses of incredibly grim news, from murders to government corruption. This other site is devoted to exclusively upbeat news about the city

Of course, as Alan Thicke once wrote, "You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the facts of life." (Ha! Thanks for indulging that.) Of course it's important to be aware of the bad news, but the local media (and especially the national media) don't do much to temper it.
